When should mulch be refreshed?
Once a year, usually in spring after the beds are cleaned out and before summer heat sets in. Two to three inches is the target; piling it deeper against tree trunks and stems holds moisture where it causes rot. Pine straw breaks down faster than hardwood mulch and typically wants a top-up in autumn as well.
Do fallen leaves really need removing, or can they stay on the lawn?
A light scattering can be mulched with the mower and left. A thick mat of leaves cannot: it blocks light, holds moisture, and smothers fescue over winter, and by spring the lawn under it is dead or diseased.
