Fertilization & Weed Control, in practice
Pre-emergent is the highest-value application in the program and the one most often applied too late. It has to be down before soil temperature reaches germination, and in a warm Middle Tennessee February that can be weeks earlier than the calendar suggests. After crabgrass has germinated it does nothing at all.
Fescue and bermuda want opposite programs at opposite times. Feeding bermuda hard in June is right; feeding fescue hard in June pushes growth into the heat that will kill it. Which turf you have decides the whole calendar.

When should pre-emergent go down in Middle Tennessee?
Before soil temperatures hold at 55°F, which in Nashville is usually late February into March — earlier than most people expect. Pre-emergent stops crabgrass seed germinating; once the seed is up it does nothing. A second application in late spring extends the protection through summer, and an autumn application handles the winter annuals.
Why does my lawn have weeds even though it was treated?
Usually timing, sometimes the wrong product. A pre-emergent applied after crabgrass has germinated cannot work; a broadleaf herbicide applied in high heat can burn the grass and miss the weed. The other cause is a thin lawn: bare ground is an invitation, and the most reliable weed control on any Nashville lawn is grass thick enough that there is no room.
