How do I know if I have grubs?
Lift a square foot of turf where the lawn is browning. If it rolls back like carpet with almost no roots and there are more than five or six white C-shaped grubs underneath, that is a grub problem. Fewer than that and the lawn will outgrow them. Brown patches can also be drought, fungus or dog urine, and treating the wrong one wastes a season, so the test comes before the product.
What is brown patch, and why does my lawn get it every summer?
A fungal disease that hits fescue when nights stay above 70°F and the grass stays wet — which is most of a Middle Tennessee July. It shows as roughly circular tan patches, often with a darker ring at the edge. Evening watering, heavy nitrogen in summer and short mowing all feed it. Preventive fungicide timed to the weather helps; watering early in the morning and mowing tall help more.
