Sod laid over unprepared ground follows the ground. Grading, removing the old turf and preparing the soil is most of the job, and it is the part that decides whether the lawn is level and whether the roots ever leave the sod mat.

Sod can go down most of the year here as long as it is watered, and it stops erosion immediately. Seed is a fraction of the cost but only works reliably for fescue in September and October.
How much do I need to water new sod?
Daily for the first two weeks, enough to keep the soil under it damp — usually twenty to thirty minutes per zone, twice a day in real heat. Then every other day for two weeks, then a normal schedule. Sod that dries out in its first fortnight shrinks, gaps at the seams and does not root, and that is the failure we see most often on lawns laid without an irrigation plan.
